Villareal, 17, is facing assault and murder charges in the death of her son.

(WCNC.COM) CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte teenage mother is in jail charged in the assault and death of her newborn baby.

Neighbors at Maple Run in North Charlotte were shocked to hear one of their neighbors, 17-year-old Daniela Villareal has been charged with the assault and murder of her newborn baby, Luis Miguel, Jr.

“Your heart fails, especially when it happens to a baby, anywhere, It really hurt you, especially you know, you have children having children– they don’t know how to raise no child,” said neighbor Gretchen.

CMPD says when they responded to the apartment, they found the baby, born on December 11, unresponsive. He later died at CMC. Through the investigation police say the baby was physically assaulted which led to his death.

“It’s horrible. Why would, they never, I mean she didn’t, my understand is I think she was the girlfriend of one of the sons, but I never knew much about her, she kept to herself,” said neighbor, Lilia Zavala.

But Zavala says she saw Villareal out once with the baby.

“She would just be carrying him. It was cold so she rushed to the car; it would be bundled up, but I didn’t see anything other than that,” said Zavala.

Which is why some neighbors who didn’t know her say, she was just a child herself.

“It’s unbelievable, I can’t believe it, but only her and God know exactly what happened,” said one neighbor.

But neighbors did hold a prayer memorial for little Luis Miguel Jr, whose life was taken before he even reach 1-month-old.
