Tanker truck fire ignites in St. Petersburg; driver in critical condition

The crash ignited a fire at approximately 12:30 am Tuesday.


(BTLS Staff) ST. PETERSBURG – A two-vehicle crash ignited a large fire early Tuesday in St. Petersburg.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am at the intersection of 4th St. North and Gandy Blvd.

According to a St. Petersburg Fire Rescue report a utility truck struck a tanker carrying approximately 10,000 gallons of fuel. The truck ignited leaving the driver with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over most of his body.

The unidentified man was airlifted by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The driver of the utility truck suffered minor injuries was treated and released.

The official cause of the crash is not yet known as the investigation continues.
