Suspect shot dead following altercation with St. Petersburg Police officer

The incident occurred just before 6 pm in the Coffee Pot Bayou neighborhood of St. Petersburg.

(WFLA.COM) ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A St. Petersburg police officer shot and killed a suspect on Sunday evening, after the suspect shot at the officer, injuring him.

The shooting happened when the officer was responding to a call at about 6 pm. in the Coffee Pot Bayou area of St. Pete, according to City of St. Petersburg spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez.

The officer, whose identity has not been released, went to a home at 5236 Robin Lane N. to following up on reported shooting that occurred about 6 pm. A person shot in the area of 1886 Coffee Pot Blvd NE. The male victim told police he had a verbal altercation with man, who produced a handgun and shot him once in the hand. The armed suspect fled the scene on a bicycle.

Austin Goodner, 18, was in the yard of the home and shot at the officer after he arrived. The officer returned fire and shot and killed Goodner, according to investigators.

The officer was shot in the leg. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

This is the first police officer to be shot since Anthony Holloway was named police chief, according to Fernandez.
No other details have been released.
