Woman Whose Son Misses Too Much School Taken To Jail

MOUNT PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Mount Pleasant mother spent a few hours in jail after her son had nine unexcused absences from school and she ignored notices to appear in court, WTAE Channel 4 Action News’ Jennifer Miele reported.
“I sat next to somebody who had three DWIs, and the other girl had a robbery,” Jessica Heiser said. “She was like, ‘Oh, why are you here?,’ and I said, ‘Oh, I brought my kids on vacation.’ They were like, ‘What?’”
Heiser said her husband and kids live in Mount Pleasant, but the rest of her family lives in New York and she took her two boys to visit them around Christmas time in 2009.
Heiser was cited for truancy charges on June 16 but failed to appear at a hearing. According to court documents, she never appealed when the judge found her guilty and never paid the $200 fine.
“I thought it was silly,” Heiser said. “I was like, there’s no way they’re going to give me a fine for this, for bringing my kids on vacation.”

Heiser appeared at a court hearing on Sept. 29 and set up a $45-per-month payment plan. No payments were made for four months, and another hearing date was set.
District Judge Roger Eckels issued a bench warrant when Heiser failed to show on Jan. 6. Heiser was taken to jail for a few hours and bailed out by a neighbor.
“It is over with, for the most part, but I felt like it was a little ridiculous, over the top,” Heiser said. “I shouldn’t have went to jail for something that silly.”
Miele reported that Heiser’s child missed classes at Rumbaugh Elementary School on Dec. 15, 17, 18, 21, 22 and 23; on Jan. 19 and 29; and on May 27.
When Miele asked Heiser why she didn’t simply write an excuse for the school before going away with her children, Heiser said she made a mistake and will never let it happen again.
