ST. PETERSBURG - A woman was seriously injured after a pit bull attacked her, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Police say Patricia Thiel, 39, walked into her back yard around 2:30 p.m. Thursday and was attacked by a 100-pound pit bull.

The dog was one of three pit bulls in the backyard; the other two did not attack, police said.

Police say Thiel’s left arm was severely damaged in the attack, sustaining deep gashes to the bone. She also sustained injuries to her head, neck, right shoulder and right arm.

She’s listed in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital, officials said.

According to police, a neighbor heard her crying for help, and looked over the fence. The pit bull then charged at that neighbor.

He then ran and got Joseph Wharton, 48, who got his gun and shot the dog three times, killing it, investigators said.

Police say the two other dogs jumped the fence; one was caught, the other is still missing.
