Woman killed, five injured in shooting at Cloud 9 in Ocala
Carol Rembert wept as she stared at a small memorial in front of Cloud 9 in Ocala where her niece died early Sunday morning after being shot.
Authorities say at least one gunman opened fire into a crowd outside the South Pine Avenue nightclub.
Benetria Robinson, 19, a 2014 Forest High School graduate, died and five others were injured during the 1:30 a.m. Sunday shooting. Marion County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lauren Lettelier said no suspect or suspects have been identified as of late Sunday.
“That’s where she fell,” said Rembert, when she saw a blood stain next to the makeshift memorial consisting of a stuffed Mickey Mouse doll and a “kickball” shirt. “Jesus, have mercy. Oh, Christ. That’s where she fell.”
Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tom Terrell said Ocala Police Department officers arrived first at the scene to find six victims had been shot, with all of them lying in various locations. Since Cloud 9 sits just outside the city limits, the sheriff’s deputies quickly arrived at the scene, Terrell said. The club is located on South Pine Avenue, which also is known as U.S. 441, three blocks or so south of Southeast 17th Street.
Officials soon found Robinson dead at the scene and five individuals injured. They were quickly taken to undisclosed hospitals in a two-county area. For their protection, the Sheriff’s Office also did not release the names of the injured victims or which hospitals they were taken to for treatment.
“We will not rest while the suspect (or suspects) are on the loose,” Lettelier said.
