TAMPA — Wanted for killing a 9-year-old girl in a weekend dispute in South Florida, a murder suspect walked into Tampa police headquarters and surrendered Monday, authorities said.

Jody Gordon, 41, of Davie was arrested on a first-degree murder charge and taken to the Orient Road Jail while awaiting a return to Broward County, police said.

Gordon surrendered a day after police said he opened fire on a minivan as the girl’s mother, another woman and four children were trying to flee a Davie apartment building.

The girl, identified by the Miami Herald as Mayia Nelson, was struck in the head by a single shot and later died.

No one else in the van was struck, and after the shooting the girl’s mother drove it to a nearby Publix supermarket to seek help.
