Veteran fights off attacker

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) — A crippled U.S. Veteran is speaking about his horrific attack at home.

On Sunday night, Hollywood Police received a call from Life Alert stating that a patient had activated his emergency button and said that someone was attacking him inside of his apartment.

Carl Arnold, 68, said he was inside his apartment when he heard a knock at his front door. Arnold said that he armed himself with a knife and then opened the door to see who the male subject was outside. When Arnold opened the door, he said, the suspect threw gasoline on him and attempted to light him on fire with a lighter. At that point, a struggle ensued; the suspect was stabbed several times, and Arnold sustained a bite wound. “I got this knock last night, and I hollered just a minute. He didn’t say jack. I opened the door, and this guy just starts barging his way in, and I’m trying to hold him back,” said Arnold. “I looked down and I said, ‘What do you got in your hand?’”

The US Veteran then hit the medical alert necklace he wears around his neck. “When they came on, they asked me if I needed help, and I told them, ‘Yes. Get the police. I’m being attacked,’” he recalled.

According to police, 43-year-old Shawn Kay was Arnold’s attacker. “He might have targeted me because he saw the wheelchair out there,” said the 68-year-old.

Both the victim and suspect were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital. The victim was treated and released. However, the suspect remains in the hospital in critical condition.

Arnold said, people should stand up for themselves more often. “Just because I’m old, fat, ugly and crippled doesn’t mean you can take advantage of me,” he said jokingly.

Detectives have charged Kay with the attempted murder. Kay was also charged with one count of burglary.
