Urban Meyer: Urban Meyer, Florida coach, resigns

December 9th, 2010 by Staff

Source: Long Island Press — Urban Meyer, citing a desire to spend more time with his family, resigned from his post as head football coach of the Florida Gators late on Wednesday, ending his six-year tenure there.

Meyer’s run as coach at Florida was marked by remarkable success, as the Gators won two national championships and provided a steady pipeline of players for the NFL.

However, Meyer became physically and emotionally drained by the rigors of coaching big-time college football, having taken a leave of absence from his post late in 2009 (and flirting with resigning) to deal with health issues. He returned for the balance of that campaign and assumed fewer duties in 2010, but the Gators slipped to 7-5. As well, the program has come under fire in recent years for dubious recruiting standards in the wake of several Florida players dealing with legal troubles.
