JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville police are investigating the attack of a young mother at her home and a mysterious package filled with marijuana.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, on Monday around lunchtime, Carmen Bernard, had a package delivered to her house on Odell Street. She noticed it did not belong to her and planned to return it to the sender, who was in California.

But minutes after the package arrived, there was a knock at her door and Bernard, 32, said a man demanded the box that was just delivered.

Bernard, whose 7-month-old was sleeping in her crib at the time, said when she told the man she did not have anything of his, he grabbed her, threw her to the ground and started choking her.

“My chest is bruised up, my neck is very sore,” said Bernard.

She began to scream, and some people nearby ran to help her. The suspect let Bernard go and took off in a car.

Bernard called police, and she and the officers opened the package and found 15 pounds of marijuana. “I’m definitely in fear of retaliation. You never know what these guys are gonna do,” said Bernard.

The young mother has put signs stating “JSO has your package” on the doors to her home to warn the suspect not to come back.

The box was shipped from Los Angeles.
