Two arrested following poop prank at luxury Vinoy Resort pool
St. Petersburg, Florida – Two teens are facing felony charges following a prank that shut down the main swimming pool at an exclusive Tampa Bay Area resort.
Security guards at the Renaissance Vinoy in downtown St. Petersburg say they witnessed 19-year-old Michael Cline and 18-year-old Andrew Harris defecating in the hotel pool shortly after midnight Thursday morning. Investigators say the two men then smeared their feces on the bottom of the pool.
“I think most of [the guests] understand it’s outside our span of control,” said hotel general manager Russ Bond.
The main pool was shut down and taped off with yellow tape. Guests wanting to go swimming were shuttled to the nearby city operated Northshore Pool or a smaller pool at the resort’s Gulf Course about 10 minutes away.
“Fortunately in the big scheme of things it’s been a quieter day at the resort today. Fortunately something like this didn’t happen on a Saturday afternoon or a Saturday morning,” Bond said.
Guest Kathy Stricker visiting from St. Louis with her grandson was not impressed by the teens actions.
“I think it’s rude, I think its incomprehensible that they would pull something like this,” said Stricker.
The pool is expected to reopen Friday. Cline and Harris were both arrested in booked into the Pinellas County Jail on felony burglary charges because of the cost to clean the pool ran into the thousands of dollars.
The hotel’s manager says this is at least the second time in recent weeks the pool has been shut down due to someone intentionally defecating in the water.
