Treasure Island considers alcohol beach restrictions

Treasure Island City Commission will be meeting on the “Alcohol Beach Restrictions” Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 6pm at Treasure Island City Hall, 120 108th Avenue.

Treasure Island, FL – The beach party scene is apparently getting to rowdy and Treasure Island officials say they want to bring it under control. They say the drinking along Sunset Beach in particular has led to some recent problems.

“Of late… the crowd is becoming more rowdy, more disrespectful, less compliant with the order of the police department,” City Manager Reid Silverboard said.

So city commissioners are considering a ban on alcohol on all public beaches between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The ban, which could be approved as early as next month, would also apply to the 4th of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

“Other days of the week, other times of the day you could bring a beer down or have a martini as you watch the sunset,” Silverboard added.

Officials say if the ordinance is approved, violators could face a fine of up to $500 plus time in jail.

The issue will next be discussed at the commissions’ May 3rd meeting.
