www.wtic.com — A 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy are okay, after they were found wearing only diapers, wandering in the woods near Flatbrook Road in East Hampton this morning.

East Hampton Police Sergeant Michael Green says the mother of the children has been arrested on charges of risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment.

“When we spoke to her, it was obvious she was under the influence of some type of drug,” Green said. “Further investigation revealed that she is prescribed prescription pain killers for medical problems, and

“She was in no condition to be caring for the kids in the first place,” Green said.

Police say Julie Root discovered the children were gone. She told police she works the third shift, and got home about 7:30 in the morning. She said she may have dozed off while taking care of the children.

The father was also home, but he was asleep.

It was about 50-degrees and raining outside, and the toddlers were wearing only diapers.

A neighbor spotted the boys, and called police.

The state Department of Children and Families is investigating the family.
