Thieves not the only ones tracked by GPS

One stolen car is raising lots of questions about public safety, and your right to privacy.
On most days it would be just another arrest. But on Monday, state police took a man into custody because the car he’s accused of stealing was equipped with a hidden GPS device.
“We see more and more of it these days as it becomes cheaper and easier for people to equip vehicles with it,” said Virginia State Police Sgt. Kenneth S. Downs.
The device was installed by an auto sales business in the Tri-cities area, in a perfect example of how technology can help solve crimes. But after calling the dealer, NBC 12 learned that it’s not uncommon for those devices to be left on purchased vehicles without the buyer’s knowledge.
“That device is placed somewhere on the vehicle. In an inconspicuous location,” said Michael Allen of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association.
