Tampa man charged with stabbing mother 18 times

TAMPA – A Tampa man stabbed his mother 18 times, then stabbed the family cat shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Swanniee Squier, 71, was stabbed in the torso and hands by her son, Donald Steven Carr, 47, in their home at 9377 Eden Drive, according to deputies, who said Carr used several knives to stab his mother.

Squier was taken to a local hospital and was expected to recover, deputies said.

The cat, named Cougar, died, deputies said.

Carr was arrested and charged with attempted murder and cruelty to animals.

He was being held in a Hillsborough County Jail with no bail set, according to jail records.
