Student had 5 guns, knives, ammo at school
nbc-2.com – A Riverdale High School student was arrested after Lee County deputies found five guns, two knives and several boxes of ammunition in the student’s car parked in the school parking lot.
According to deputies, a teacher received a tip over the weekend that a student had a firearm while driving on campus during a weekend event at the school. The tipster gave the teacher a partial license plate number, but didn’t have the student’s name.
The tip eventually led school administrators and the School Resource Officer to meet with student 17-year-old Michael Boyko.
Monday at 9 a.m., administrators and the SRO asked Boyko if he had anything at school he shouldn’t have. He replied, “Yes. A lot,” according to deputies.
School leaders and the SRO went with Boyko to his vehicle.
Inside, administrators and the SRO found a knife and gun in the back seat, a knife and a Taser in the door. Two magazines with ammunition were on the passenger seat, according to deputies.
In the trunk were two long guns and two duffle bags. In one of the bags were boxes of ammunition, two loaded handguns, several knives, a ski mask, gloves and a large set of bolt cutters, according to deputies.
There was also a half filled bottle of vodka and a case of beer in the car, reports said.
Boyko, of North Fort Myers, was charged with 5 counts of possession of firearm on school property; 2 counts of possession of weapon on school property; 1 count possession of burglary tools; 5 counts of possession of firearm by a minor; 1 count possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor.
Boyko’s neighbors weren’t surprised by the arrest.
They say their North Fort Myers neighborhood has been under a barrage of gunfire.
“Gunshots going off on weekends, during the week, in the evenings, like target practice,” said one neighbor.
They say sometimes as late as 3:00 a.m., they would hear gunfire coming from Boyko’s home.
“I’ve come up to the gate and seen him in the back of the house shooting,” said a neighbor.
Boyko has been transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. At this point, it is unknown what he planned to do with the weapons in the car.
