JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An eighth-grade soccer player who had been hospitalized in critical condition since suffering injuries during a middle school soccer match last week has died.
Josh Walter, 14, was playing in a game between Jeb Stuart and Kirby Smith middle schools when he and a player from the opposing team collided, a school district spokeswoman said.
Walter was flown to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with swelling around his brain. The other player’s name and the extent of his injuries were never released.
Walter’s church, Highlands Baptist, announced his death on its website, saying, “Please pray for the family and friends of Joshua Walter in his passing.”
The pastor and staff at the church said they plan to speak with the media about Walter’s death Tuesday afternoon.
