Source: Sky Sports — Tony Stewart held off Clint Bowyer to win the Pepsi Max 400 at Auto Club Speedway as Jimmie Johnson finished third to increase his lead in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Stewart finished 0.466 seconds ahead of Bowyer to win his first race at the two-mile Fontana oval track, his second of the season and the 39th of his career.

Although Stewart’s win moved him to within 107 points of Johnson, the title chances of a number of other Chase drivers suffered heavy blows on Sunday.

Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle suffered blown engines, Carl Edwards had an ignition rotor failure, while Kurt Busch was involved in a late crash with David Ragan.

Johnson, on the other hand, leaves his home track 36 points ahead of second-placed Denny Hamlin, who finished eighth at Fontana.

With six Chase races to go only Hamlin, Kevin Harvick (54 points back) and Jeff Gordon (85 back) are within 100 points of the four-time defending champion.

Non-Chase runners Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Mark Martin finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Harvick was seventh, followed by Hamlin, Gordon and David Reutimann.
