St. Pete among ‘meanest’ cities for homeless

July 15th, 2009 by

ST. PETERSBURG – St. Petersburg has been named the second meanest city in the nation for the homeless. The ranking comes from a report by the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty and the National Coalition for the Homeless. It focuses on specific city measures from 2007 and 2008 that target homeless people.

The report includes information about 273 cities nationwide. It also ranks the top 10 U.S. cities with the worst practices for criminalizing homelessness.

The ranking is based on a number of factors, including the number of anti-homeless laws in the city, and the enforcement of those laws.

The group says most cities do not have adequate shelter space or affordable housing.

The Top Ten Meanest Cities from the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty and the National Coalition for the Homeless:

I agree, Homeless need to do something to get a job. if they would rather live in a box, panhandle from working people and excrete in the public bushes and alleyways, then extradite them, make it illegal to do NOTHING about their situation. Get a job, some kinda of job and quit being a frigging bum!! I carry generic job applications in my console solely for street side panhandlers and I DO hand one to them when they approach my truck for a handout. They get mad!! as for the disabled bums, and I mean DISABLED not the cons that only where leg-braces when they’re bumming money and you see them the next day throwing a football around in an abandon Winn Dixie parking lot, the truly disabled, there are systems for people like that. Go after the system if they don’t comply and screen these bums and make sure there’s no way for them to work BEFORE giving them a dime. Or throw them out of town. They trash our downtown parks and make me scared to walk the streets during day much-less night without being hassled for change. Power to the working class and clean up our streets and roadside bum hide outs, which are noticed by the landfill looking sites of trash surrounding a fire pit.

therse my view and I stand by it 110%

im from st.pete and i dont think there are that many homeless. travel to other metro areas and you will see what im talking about. This is a problem that st.pete is going to have to deal with. especially in the last decade or so the city has wanted to come on to its own and grow. With the weather and expanding city life we now have big city problems. deal with it or become LA which has a literal shanty town. williams park could easily become that if the city does not change its policies.
