Spilled Milk Led to Toddler’s Death
RACINE - Two-year-old Jovani Martinez was punched repeatedly by his mother’s boyfriend, according to a criminal complaint filed in Racine County Court Monday.
According to the complaint, Jovani was playing with his bottle and spilled milk on his sister. His mother’s boyfriend, Manuel Garcia was watching the kids and became so enraged, he threw the boy onto a bed repeatedly and punched him as many as 6 times.
That afternoon, he dropped Jovani off with the boy’s mother, Lawanda Martinez. Lawanda and Jovani went to Lawanda’s mother’s house.
Wanda Williams tells TODAY’S TMJ4 her grandson was lethargic. “He was dizzy. He wasn’t responding to nothing. I kept telling her to take her to the hospital,” she said.
Lawanda refused to take the boy to the hospital for care until late that night. By that time, it was too late.
Jovani died of blunt force trauma. The impact of his injuries were so great, his intestines were perforated, his ribs broken, and his liver ruptured.
Neither Martinez nor Garcia has a prior record of abuse. Police said they had not received reports of problems with the care of the children.
A medical examiner’s investigation showed no sign that Jovani had been abused repeatedly.
Garcia, 24, is charged with First Degree Reckless Homicide. He is being held in jail on $300,000 cash bond.
Martinez, 40, is charged with Child Neglect Resulting In Death. She is being held on $75,000 cash bond.

Hanging is too good for these people. Let me have 5 minutes with the boyfriend? I think I can perforate his intenstines, crack his ribs and rupture his liver in those 5 minutes. I’m up for that challenge, please!
