Shopper, Armed with Kitchen Knife, Stabs Four at West Hollywood Target

WEST HOLLYWOOD – A woman believed to be suffering from mental issues is under arrest after sheriff’s deputies say she stabbed four shoppers at a West Hollywood Target store.

Three women and a man were stabbed and taken to area hospitals.

A mother holding her baby was stabbed in the neck and was taken to the hospital, where she was in stable condition, Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said. The baby was unhurt and all four victims were expected to survive.

The sheriff’s office said Layla Rosetta Trawick, 35, from Antioch, Calif., started stabbing people, apparently at random, on Monday afternoon.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Mankini said an off-duty deputy who was shopping pulled out his gun and ordered Trawick to the ground.

The off-duty deputy was identified as Clay Grant Jr., who is assigned to the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, Capt. Michael Parker said.

Grant was shopping when he heard screaming nearby.

He turned the corner and saw the woman carrying two bloody knives, including a butcher knife.

He drew his weapon and ordered her to surrender.

She was arrested with the help of private security guards.

“Her facial expression was someone who was lost, confused, didn’t know exactly where they were,” Grant said.

Trawick used a butcher’s knife and a carving knife to attack the victims, using both blades at the same time — one in each hand, like in the movie “Psycho,” Whitmore said.

“She was literally walking up and down the aisles slashing people,” he said.

A fifth person was injured as panicked customers ran from the store.

Numerous people in the store called 911 thinking a man with a gun was involved in a crime, but that was not the case, Mankini said.

“There was a panic in the store,” Mankini said, noting witnesses outside the store initially believed there had been a shooting.

“Everyone and their brother was calling 911.”

A motive for the stabbing was not immediately known, but Trawick is believed to be suffering from mental issues.

It just goes to figure. and the kicker, this Target is located right across the street from the police station.
