TAMPA – Funeral services were held today for a Hillsborough County deputy who died when his cruiser collided with a tractor-trailer in downtown Tampa last week.

Visitation for Deputy Mark Longway was held from 9:30 until 11:00 this morning followed by a service with full honors afterward at Idlewild Baptist Church in north Tampa.

“It’s something you hope never happens. You think about it all the time. This a very sad day,” Sergeant Joel Mathews, Longway’s supervisor and squad leader said. “He was a good man. He could make the best out of any situation. He could always make you laugh.”

Longway is survived by his wife Laura and two adult daughters, Sherri Longway and Brandi Trzaska.

Longway, 48, was killed Tuesday at the intersection of Florida Avenue and Scott Street around 5:15 a.m.

One of the vehicles apparently ran a red light, but it is not clear which. The investigation continues.

Anyone who may have been a witness to the crash is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
