SeaWorld adds barriers to pool

Source: Orlando Sentinel — SeaWorld Orlando has installed a series of removable guard rails around the main show pool in Shamu Stadium, the latest in a series of steps the company has taken following the death of a killer-whale trainer earlier this year.

A spokesman for Orlando-based SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment said the railings, which were installed earlier this month, are designed to be added and removed as necessary when trainers and killer whales are in close proximity to one another. The railings fit into small holes around the edge of the pool and in the shallow, underwater ledges that trainers use during performances of the theme park’s popular orca show “Believe.”

SeaWorld spokesman Fred Jacobs described the rails as “one of many additional safety measures” that have emerged from an exhaustive safety review launched after the Feb. 24 death of trainer Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by a six-ton orca named Tilikum.
