Rays buy interest in ‘Tuskers’

ST. PETERSBURG – Can you picture yourself sitting at the Trop and cheering on the Tuskers? The Tampa Bay Rays and their partners in a new professional football league hope so.

The United Football League unveiled its Florida franchise Wednesday, explaining that the name ‘Tuskers’ was selected by a fan vote, and the blue and green colors were inspired by the sky and grass, respectively.

The team will be based in Orlando and play other teams that are mostly based in cities without NFL franchises. But the Rays bought a stake in the team, and the Tuskers will play one game — against the Las Vegas Locomotives — at Tropicana Field in St. Pete on October 30.

Former NFL coach Jim Haslett will be the Tuskers’ head coach.

The Tuskers’ first game of the season will be on October 10 at the Citrus Bowl against New York. The team says tickets start at $15.

As crazy as this might be, this MIGHT actually work. This sounds XFLish, but without the stupidity.
