Principal’s Call Eyed In Teacher’s Miscarriage

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) ― Hollywood Hills High School Principal Chip Osborn is coming under fire from the Broward Teachers Union. Representatives claim he called one of his teachers, who was hospitalized in premature labor, to tell her she was being transferred. Hours later, they say she miscarried.

“Here she’s fighting for the life of her child,” said Paulette Exile, the aunt of the 27-year-old teacher involved. “Now, she has to think, ‘What should I do about the paperwork?’”

“What he was improper to contact someone in a crisis time in the hospital; it was inappropriate and insensitive to someone in a critical condition,” says co-worker and union representative Jeb Handwerger.

The union is calling for a full scale investigation, which the school district has since launched. The principal remains at the school and is not currently scheduled to be transferred.

Broward Teachers Union representatives say the teacher was being treated at Memorial Hospital in Miramar when she got the call from the principal. It’s a call they say was made to a hospital phone and answered by a nurse who claims the principal insisted on talking to the teacher.

The teacher returned to work on Tuesday. The principal has since apologized to the teacher and offered condolences.
