WASHINGTON ( President Obama is donating the $1.4 million in Nobel Peace Prize award money to 10 charities as he promised when he was honored last year.

“These organizations do extraordinary work in the U.S. and abroad helping students, veterans and countless others in need,” Obama said. “I’m proud to support their work.”

The biggest single gift of $250,000 goes to Fisher House, where families of military personnel wounded in war stay. The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund that helps victims of the January earthquake gets the next biggest chunk at $200,000.

Six other charities will get $125,000: College Summit; the Posse Foundation; the United Negro College Fund; the Hispanic Scholarship Fund; the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation, and the American Indian College Fund. AfriCare and the Central Asia Institute will get $100,000 each.
