Port Charlotte mother arrested in sex case involving toddler

A 26-year-old Port Charlotte woman is accused of allowing and participating in sexual acts with her 18-month-old daughter.

Melissa Ann Bailey, 26, was arrested Thursday by Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies on charges of capital sexual battery, principal to capital sexual battery, lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under the age of 12 and possession of child pornography (with two videos), use of a child in sexual performance, lewd exhibition and lewd or lascivious conduct.

On Tuesday, deputies arrested Bailey’s boyfriend, 59-year-old Glenn M. Nelson of Punta Gorda, on similar charges, including 20 counts of possession of child pornography by sex performance of a child. Nelson remains in Charlotte County Jail with no bond.

“If it’s true, I think there’s probably no punishment that would be good enough,” said Nelson’s cousin, James Sharp, 67. “I just don’t understand it. You know, some things you could maybe understand. But molesting an infant – I don’t know how a mind gets that warped.”

Sharp has known Nelson since he was born, and said he and everyone who knew Nelson are beside themselves with shock.

“He’s always been a very normal person, very normal around kids, around women, doesn’t drink, doesn’t do drugs, never has,” Sharp said. “If it’s true, it was a well-kept secret.”

Sharp said Nelson and Bailey met about three years ago. He said he had met the little girl once.

“She was probably five or six months old at the time,” he recalled. “She was a cute little baby, and we were all talking, passing her around. There was nothing out of the ordinary.”

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Carpenter said detectives believe Bailey and Nelson had been sexually abusing the baby girl since she was born. She is now in custody of relatives.

It’s not clear exactly when detectives began investigating or what tipped them off, but their investigation led them to serve a search warrant on Bailey’s Helms Way home. They confiscated her computer and several other items. That evidence led them to search Nelson’s home, where a total of six computers were confiscated.

“Computer crimes detectives found child pornography images, chat files between Bailey and Nelson discussing having sex with her baby via Web cam and other images,” Carpenter reported.

In the chat files, Carpenter said investigators found conversations where the two discussed having sex with the child.

Bailey does not appear to have a prior criminal record.

Somethings are just beyond sick. A 59 year old man molesting an 18 month old baby, while the 26 year old mom helps. These two sick s.o.b.’s shouldn’t even be giving a trial. Whatever is the quickest, cheapest way to rid society of them. Once you have gone that far, there is no coming back. Maybe make some use of them by tossing them alive into the Gulf about 10 miles out. Then they at least could feed a couple of sharks with their bodies. Shark feed is about all these two are worth.
