Popular H.S. Football Coach Arrested In Prostitution Sting
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — 68-year-old John Maronto is one of the winningest coaches in the state of Florida. He was arrested over the weekend in an undercover sting. Police say the Mainland High School head coach offered a woman 50 dollars for sex, but that woman turned out to be an undercover officer.
WFTV got a copy of the police report detailing exactly what the coach is accused of doing.
Players and other coaches pulled into school parking lot Monday morning for what we believe was a team meeting about the incident.
As soon as WFTV reporter Jeff Deal and his photographer walked onto campus, a woman who refused to identify herself, screamed at them to stay away. Later an assistant principal said it was a private team meeting.
Later Monday morning the team was out practicing but there was no sign of coach John Maronto.
All of this stems from his arrest for prostitution early Sunday morning.
The police report says Maronto pulled up to an undercover female officer who was posing as a prostitute. According to the report Maronto said he wanted “a date.” He allegedly offered the undercover officer 50 dollars for sex.
“We work hard on one hand to eradicate that cancer and on the other hand I have people I should count on who are feeding that, and that’s disturbing,” said Mike Chitwood, Daytona Beach Police Chief.
WFTV requested the video and audio of the incident but police say it has been checked into evidence. They said they will not release it Monday.
Coach Maronto has not been suspended, the school district says it will meet with him Tuesday to discuss the arrest.
John Maronto is one of just two coaches to take a Volusia County school all the way to a state championship. He is the second winningest coach in Florida high school football.
Two years ago Maronto fought back from triple bypass surgery to return to the sidelines at Mainland High School. The Bucs have been to the playoffs 14 straight years under Maronto. The team’s next game is Thursday.
