Police: Texas Couple Kept 12-Year-Old Daughter In Closet
BROWNSVILLE (kwtx)–A Brownsville couple was in custody Tuesday, accused of keeping the woman’s 12-year-old daughter in an unlit closet in their home for about a year.
Alfredo and Leticia Ines were held in the Cameron County Jail.
They’re both charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint.
Their bonds were set at $275,000 each.
Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique said the couple released the girl from the closet only to attend school, eat or use the bathroom during the day.
Investigators said she would do her homework at night by the light coming from beneath the door.
Police said she appeared to be malnourished and looked small for her age.
Texas Child Protective Services began investigating after one of the girl’s three brothers reported the situation to officials at his school.
The girl has been placed in foster care.
Her three brothers are staying with other family members.
