Police: Man Lived With Mother’s Corpse For 6 Months

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WLKY) – A nine-hour SWAT standoff ended early Friday morning when an armed man surrendered and let officers inside a home in the 1700 blk. of Cypress Street.
When police searched the home, they found a badly decomposed body.

Police said 88-year-old Sina Harris died six months ago and was left to decompose in her bed while her son continued to live in the house.
Her son, Julius Harris, faces two felony charges, one for abusing a corpse and another for theft by deception.

Thursday, police went to the house around 5:30 p.m. to check the welfare of Sina Harris. Julius Harris answered the door with a gun to his head. That man locked himself inside the home.
SWAT teams eventually made phone contact with the Harris and persuaded him to surrender just before 2 a.m. Friday morning.
Police then arrested Julius Columbus Harris, 52.
“It shocks the conscious of what a normal person would do,” said Louisville Metro Police Department Lt. Barry Wilkerson.
Harris left his mother’s body in bed where he said she died.
“It just appears she was left as is, sleeping in the bed, nothing done further to her. She was just left in that condition,” Wilkerson said.

According to arrest records, Harris told police his mother died the Friday before Mother’s Day.
An autopsy performed Friday revealed she had heart disease and likely died of natural causes.
Police said Harris, who lived with his mother, never told anybody and just left her in her bed.
“We’ve counted, seven whole months. What could he have possibly been doing to not report that to anybody, or anybody else in his family?” said neighbor Renee Cantrell.

According to police, Harris, who was unemployed, used his deceased mother as his primary source of income.
“He continued to write checks and cash checks she was receiving from different agencies and companies,” said Wilkerson.

“It’s strange because I was just telling my friends that I hadn’t seen her in so long. I said she could be inside that house, because nobody really knew what happened to her and I was just kidding,” said Cantrell.
Julius Harris is expected in court next week. If convicted on both charges, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Funeral arrangements for Sina Harris are being made.
