Pit bull terrorizing neighborhood

LEHIGH ACRES (www.nbc-2.com): Residents in one Lehigh Acres neighborhood say they are terrified of being attacked by their neighbor’s pit bull. One resident won’t leave home without a bat.

“It was literally coming after me. Barking, vicious, growling. It was the most frightening thing. I feared for my life,” said Melissa Alford.

Alford now walks her block with a baseball bat.

She says Thursday morning a neighbor’s pit bull tried to attack her while walking on the street.

“I have fear of coming out of my house now. I don’t want to come out of my house without protection,” said Alford.

Alford says the near attack happened near 12th Street West and Xelda Avenue.

Others say they too have been almost attacked by a tan pit bull.

“It’s not friendly, very aggressive–it’s not a pleasant sight,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.

“I had a job interview at eleven today. I had to postpone because of the anxiety this put me under–this is my life and I felt very threatened,” said Alford.

Neighbors say the dog and her owners live at a home on 14th Street.

We knocked on the door but no one answered. We saw what appears to be a tan pit bull inside.

Animal Control officers have been to the house before. The county says four citations have been written at the home for having animals not properly licensed and vaccinated.

“We have talked to the owner and advised him of the situation and we hope the first contact corrects the problem but we’ll see,” said Ria Brown of Lee County Domestic Animal Services.

Brown says residents will have to sign formal statements to start a dangerous dog investigation.

Alford says she’ll sign one.

“I’m going to have to be put on anxiety pills for this because I won’t be able to sleep. I’ll have the pictures of that dog in my head all night,” said Alford.
