Pit bull attacks, kills infant

April 15th, 2010 by

MOON LAKE – Deputies in Pasco County say an infant died this morning after a pit bull attacked him.

Emergency crews responded to a home on Olsen Street in the Moon Lake area of Pasco County just after noon.

The 7-day-old infant was rushed to the hospital, but later pronounced dead.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, the baby and his mother were sleeping in the same room as the dog, which investigators said was a brindle-type pit bull.

They say the father, 20-year-old Thomas James Carter, woke up, fed the child, and left for work around 5:30 a.m.

Then a neighbor knocked on the door around noon

“Around noon, a friend came over to see the mother, knocked on the door, and that’s when they found the child had been mauled by the pit bull,” said Pasco sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Doll. “It’s a pretty terrible case. This child has at least 50 puncture wounds on its body.”

Investigators are now testing the mom, 16-year-old Nicole Koezeno, to see if she was under the influence of any kind of drugs.

Detectives say after the dog attacked the infant, it escaped the home and attacked another dog down the street. Animal control now has custody of the dog, and they say it will be put down.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

I have a pit/lab mix and she is the sweetest dog I have ever had. She is loyal, gentle and friendly. She even plays with my cat and the cats probably hurt her more than anything. She’s great with other dogs, and people. And thats all in the way my husband and I have trained her. Still I would never leave her alone with a baby. Even if she didn’t want to hurt it she could by trying to play with it. Dogs don’t have to be aggressive for things like this to happen. Take care of your baby. I know we don’t know where the infant was, but it doesn’t sound like the baby was in a safe place either way. Even if my new born was in the same room as me it would be in a pack n play or some sort of crib. My dog wouldn’t be able to get to it and I would be aware of the baby and alert. Thats what parents are supposed to do. It can’t be that difficult to provide a safe place for your child especially when you are in the same room. This whole story is ridiculous. Sure the dog obviously needs to be put down, but I blame the mother more than anything.

I am in agreement with Cowhead about pit bulls. Get a large swimming pool, throw them ALL in it, pour some gas in it and set it off with fireworks! When people put animal’s lives before human lives, they should lose the right to breed! Unfortunately for the eaten babies, it really is natural selection at its “der, der” finest!

this is a very sensitive subject, pitbulls and babys. in this case, how is it the dogs fault? the 16 year old mother should be to blame.first of all, 16y/o should not have babys they should have backpacks, where are the 16y/o parents? this piece of shiz mother was most likely f*cked up on zany bars.its trailer trash like this that pizz me off

These Dumbazzzs are so idiotic with these pitbulls. My friend has two that I’m fine around and feel in charge but I agree with you guys about it. Why take the chance of it killing or attacking some one and these owners should be held liable for these injuries and deaths. Maybe we should start sending them to jail for 10-20 yrs. and people will start taking this SHIZZZ more seriously.

it’s sad but the pit bulls need to go. I agree that in good hands they are most likely fine…but we, as a country, typically collect unregistered hand guns that people have. This should be the same, you should have to have a permit to keep the trashy people from owning these dogs.

I also have a pit/golden lab mix and its all about the way I trained her starting from 6 months! I also ensured she was around children and cats and she is fine with them. Of course she is still an animal and I woudn’t leave her unattended with a baby or a small child under 3. She is not agressive to children naturally but a child could be injured in play since theres an obvious size and stregth difference. Also have you seen dogs shake and chew their squeaky toys and once they have chewed enough the sound stops…think about it. I dont even let my dog play with squeek toys for that exact reason. We can love our animals but we have to also respect them and their animal traits pitbull or not. My heart goes out to the family.
