Orange County sheriff’s deputy shot, killed

ORLANDO, Fla. – Authorities say an Orange County sheriff’s deputy has died after being shot during a traffic stop in Orlando. The gunman has killed himself.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the 27-year-old Deputy Brandon Coates stopped driver Brandon Lyals on Wednesday night and that Lyals fired at the deputy. The suspects sped away and authorities found 29-year-old Lyals’ body at an apartment building shortly after. Demings said Lyals “may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Authorities at first thought there may have been a second suspect but later decided Lyals acted alone.

Coates, a former U.S. Marine, had worked for the sheriff’s department for 4 1/2 years and has been married to another deputy for about one year.
