SYRACUSE, N.Y. — New York State Police held a a news conference at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to update the public on the search for escaped state prison inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat.

Police said during the news conference that they are searching the Friendship, N.Y., area for the two murderers because they received a credible, but unconfirmed, tip on Saturday from a woman who said she saw two men yesterday walking on a railroad line that runs along Route 20.

On Sunday, officers continued searching an area in Allegany County, in New York’s Southern Tier.

Police concentrated the search in the area along the route and Interstate 86, some 350 miles from the prison that David Sweat and Richard Matt fled near the Canadian border. The two broke out of the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6 using power tools and leaving behind dummies under bedcovers in their adjoining cells.
