n shows Fox 4 the brighter side of Lehigh this Christmas
LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. – With the high rate of crime in Lehigh Acres making headlines, one man is working to make the focus brighter by putting on a Christmas light show outside his home for the entire community to enjoy.
Nearly 90,000 lights and five months of preparation for the Schrecengost Light Show, a project Jason Schrecengost cherishes.
“The kids, seeing the smiles. There’s nothing better than to hear a kid say ‘Mommy, can we stay for one more song?’” he said.
The show features red, white, and blue lights synced to the music, with Christmas trees and snow men singing along.
Jason has been putting on the light show for three years now after seeing videos of similar shows on YouTube.
“It started out as a hobby and now it’s like an obsession,” he said.
He puts the show on for free, only accepting donations for the Bubba The Love Sponge Foundation, which supports fallen officers’ widows.
Last year, Schrecengost Light Show raked in $1500.
It’s a Christmas tradition Jason’s 7-year-old daughter Nadia has come to love, but said it’s the message behind her daddy’s mission that makes her smile most.
“To make our whole entire community happy,” Nadia said.
“There’s not a lot of good things that come out of Lehigh, so to be able to bring some happiness, joy in this community, I’m all for it,” Jason said.
He wants everyone to know there’s more to Lehigh than crime.
“For some reason, two percent of our population has been able to dictate 60,000 people that live in this community. There’s a lot of good people that live here, and I see it every day,” Jason told Four in Your Corner’s Lisa Greenberg.
He sees those good people when hundreds of them drive by and line the street taking cell phone videos of his masterpiece.
“Seeing htem happy and building the memories I know they’re going ot have for the rest of their life, it makes it all worth it,” Jason said.
The show runs until January 3rd, and for the week following, Jason is participating in the Blue Light Movement to support law enforcement officers.
