Man stabs lawyer with pencil

EVERETT, WA (KIRO/ CNN) – A bizarre outburst in a Washington courtroom left an attorney injured when he was attacked by his own client.

Thomas Cox and his client, Joshua Monson, 27, were in a hearing related to the man’s drug possession arrest when Monson lunged at his lawyer and stabbed him in the neck with a pencil.

“When something like that happens, you’re going, ‘Where’d this come from?’” Cox said.

“I understand he acted, I believe without thought,” said Janis Englehart, a potential juror. “I just thought ‘How bizarre is this?’”

According to court transcripts, Monson was facing a meth possession change. When the judge was about to break for lunch, he lunged over the defendant’s table and stabbed Cox with a pencil.

“By the time I whipped my head around all I saw was that they were restraining the defendant,” Cox said. “Some people react differently to stress. I think that may have been an issue with Mr. Monson.”

Cox says Monson has not apologized yet, but he is still working with him.

“I think we’re fine, and I’m just going to continue with his representation; that’s what I do,” Cox said.

Cox and Monson are both expected back in court for a competency hearing Thursday. Jury selection will start from scratch.
