Man Dies In Skydiving Accident
PALATKA, Fla. – A skydiver died Saturday afternoon after his parachute did not deploy properly, according to authorities in Putnam County.
The accident happened at Palatka Municipal Airport, also known as Kay Larkin Airport, just after 12 noon. The Palatka Police Department and the Medical Examiners Office are investigating to see whether it was a parachute malfunction or medical issue that caused the accident.
Palatka Police Department detective Mike Meredith, said 67-year-old Frank Keen died at the scene. He was a military veteran and may have been a paratrooper.
Meredith said Keen was “very experienced” and had made more than 2,000 jumps in his lifetime. Investigators said Keen died on his second jump of the day Saturday afternoon. He had been skydiving with a group of 3 other friends as part of a reunion.
A representative with Skydive Palatka, a company that operates out of the airport, told Channel 4 Keen was on one of their trips. They said they did not want to comment on the accident until the investigation was completed.
A post on their Facebook page read “RIP Frank.”
