XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – A Greene County man walked into the sheriff’s office and confessed to raping a child.

Now that man is behind bars on a $100,000 bond.

36-year old Phillip LaVerne Young is now charged with rape and gross sexual imposition.

Authorities said his own sense of guilt is what prompted this suspect to turn himself in.

“He wanted to get it off his chest, he was pretty forthcoming. The victim was also interviewed and confirmed everything he told us,” said detective Kyle Metz, with the Greene County Sheriff’s office.

Detectives said that Young initially confided in elders at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Xenia. They encouraged him to turn himself in.

According to the church’s website, Young volunteered in the toddler room of the church up until October 24th.

“At this time the Church is not involved. Everything happened outside of the Church,” said Metz.

Prosecuters requested that bond be set at $100,000 because of the serious nature of these charges.

Right now investigators believe there is only one victim in the case, but the investigation continues.
