LEHIGH ACRES: A man was caught stealing a guard rail from the road next to Lehigh Regional Medical Center, according to Lee County Sheriff’s Office reports.

A deputy driving on Lee Boulevard noticed a white van parked on Lee Boulevard between a gas station and Lehigh Regional Medical Center. The doors to the van were open and a man was holding a large piece of aluminum hand/guard rail, reports said.

The deputy watched the man put the hand/guard rail from the sidewalk in the van, reports said.

After putting the aluminum rail in the back of the van, the man drove the van behind the hospital and then out onto Lee Boulevard, according to reports.

A second deputy conducted a traffic stop on the van while the first deputy contacted the Lee County Department of Transportation about the hand/guard rail.

The suspect, identified as Richard Lee Ledbetter, admitted to taking the hand/guard rail, reports said.

A Lee DOT employee confirmed the aluminum in the back of the van belonged to the county and estimated its value at $1200, reports said.

Ledbetter was arrested and charged with grand theft greater than $300 less than $5,000.
