Man accused of shooting girl, 4, in head with BB gun

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) – A St. Petersburg man was arrested after deputies said he shot a 4-year-old girl in the head with a BB gun.

Brandon Michael Hood, 21, is facing charges of child neglect in connection with the Sept. 2009 shooting.

Detectives arrested him on Tuesday morning after medical reports indicated that the girl is still suffering serious injuries as a result of the shooting, the report said.

According to reports, on Sept. 30, the girl’s mother told detectives she had asked Hood to watch her daughter and another child while she went to a job interview.

She said she had specifically asked Hood not to shoot the BB gun around the children. The children were playing in backyard, which was where Hood was shooting at targets earlier in the day, the report said.

As the mother got into the car, she heard the little girl crying, and so she went back into the house, detectives said. She found the girl bleeding from the head.

She was told that Hood had accidentally shot the girl in the head with his BB gun, the report said.

The woman took her daughter to a local hospital for treatment. Medical reports indicated that the BB penetrated the girl’s skull and lodged in her brain, where it remains.

Doctors do not know if she will ever completely recover.

Hood remains in the Pinellas County Jail on $10,000 bond.
