Man accused of pulling teeth, beating 4-year-old autistic boy in Pennsylvania

A Pennsylvania man is in police custody, accused of physically abusing the young autistic son of his girlfriend, including forcefully removing three of the boy’s teeth.

Nicholas Kernechel, 27, of East Greenville, Pa., was charged Monday in Montgomery County with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and related offenses, the Associated Press reports.

“The victim here is a 4-year-old child who in addition to other sorts of injuries suffered his teeth being physically extracted, removed from his mouth, forcefully,” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman tells the Mercury News in Pottstown, Pa. “Certainly, one would expect the child would have experienced extreme pain and from what he has described for us it was an extremely painful and traumatic experience.

“After this violent act of removing the child’s teeth from his mouth, (Kernechel) then put him in bed and left him there, left him to suffer over night until the morning when his mother found him and saw what had been done.”

Ferman tells the Mercury News the case is one of the most “horrific” seen by her office.

The AP reports the incident occurred on July 18. Police say Kernechel, the live-in boyfriend of the mother, had been in sole care of the boy that night. The mother had gone out with friends.

The child’s mother arrived at the police station in Upper Perkiomen the next morning with her son, who had “severe facial and dental injuries.”

The lawyer for Kernechel, Patrick McMenamin Jr., tells the AP the boy’s injuries were the result of an “unfortunate accident” and not abuse. He said the boy slipped from Kernechel’s arms and hit a nightstand, which caused the injuries.

Kernechel told investigators he realized the boy’s mouth was bleeding, but decided to put him back in bed, the Mercury News reports. The child later told investigators that Kernechel hit him and took out his teeth.

Kernechel is being held in Montgomery County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
