Well, that didn’t take long. Just hours after Iggy Pop and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme shared with the world news of their surprise collaboration on Post Pop Depression, they’ve gone and performed the fruits of their labor on late night TV.

Iggy, dressed smart in a suit with Homme playing a talismanic support role, debuted the slick rock track “Gardenia” overnight on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“All I want to do is tell Gardenia what to do tonight,” sings the legendary frontman. Watch the performance below.

Iggy and Homme also discussed the evolution of the secretive project in a Q&A with the show’s host. “I proposed to him by text with my flip phone,” Iggy explained to Colbert (cue audience laughter). “We corresponded by text and prose-poem for a while. I write poetry.”

The album was cut over three weeks at Joshua Tree, California (population, 7,000 or so). “It’s easier to keep a secret when there’s no one there to tell, “said Homme. “It’s lovely because you have a chance to make mistakes and figure things out and find your own path. When you make a record and nobody is aware that you’re doing it, you’re kind of making it for each other. So you’re there to excite and dazzle each other. “

Post Pop Depression is scheduled for release March 18 on Loma Vista Recordings. Check out Iggy and Homme’s interview with Colbert below.
