Husband Arrested In Shooting, Stabbing Of Female Boxer
APOPKA, Fla. — The husband of a female boxer was arrested in Orange County on Tuesday, a week after he was accused of stabbing and shooting his wife.
James Martin was found just before 2 p.m. near the intersection of Thompson Road and Sandpiper Street, which is near the couple’s Apopka home.
An Apopka city worker recognized Martin and spoke with him before realizing he had knife wounds to his stomach, deputies said. The worker then called 911, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.
“When he (the city worker) was asked, ‘How do you know it’s Jim?’ He said, ‘I know him, I’ve known him for years. When I looked at him, he took off running,” a deputy said.
The Sheriff’s Office said K-9 deputies searched for Martin after receiving the call. He had a knife when he was located inside a shed, but he complied with orders to drop it, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Helicopter footage showed Martin being placed in an ambulance. The Sheriff’s Office said Martin was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Deputies said they believe Martins’ stab wounds were self-inflicted.
A forensics team combed over the house and backyard at 1226 Foxtree Trail on Tuesday night looking for more clues into what James Martin had been up to this past week.
After his arrest, Martin told investigators he had been hiding in his neighbor’s shed for the past week and earlier today he’d sneaked into his neighbor’s house to shower and eat while no one was home.
Detectives said it was hard to believe Martin was able to hide out so long without help .
“He was comfortable enough to stay in this area. He was comfortable enough to make phone calls to get some rides,” a deputy said.
The homeowner at the address in question, which is just a few doors down from the Martins’ house, told investigators he had no idea Martin had been on his property and he had no comment when he came out of the house Tuesday night.
Deputies said they are looking into the possibility that someone was helping James Martin hide over the past week, but as of Tuesday night, no additional charges had been filed.
Deputies said his wife, former pro boxer Christy Martin, was hospitalized with stab and gunshot wounds last Tuesday. She had stab wounds to her upper torso and left leg and had been shot, investigators said.
Christy Martin told investigators that James Martin confronted her inside their home with a knife and handgun and they began to fight. She fled after being injured and did not even realize she had been shot, she told investigators.
Deputies went to the couple’s home after the attack but could not locate her husband. Two days later, the couple’s home was burglarized.
At the Martins’ home Tuesday night, several people were moving items out of the house and back yard and packing them onto a trailer. They did not want to be interviewed but said Christy was “doing alright.”
