Hotel worker praised for kind heart

MIAMI (WSVN) — A South Florida woman is being praised for her honest heart after finding money left behind in a hotel room.

Jeanne Mydil is a housekeeper at the Miami International Airport Hotel and is known for her hard work.

Thursday morning, Mydil won praises from the hotel, airport managers and fellow housekeepers for her good heart, after a former guest accidentally left behind $6,500 in the night table drawer. “She found a bag of money in a room last week that had $6,500. First thing she did was bring it down to the housekeeping department,” said hotel general manager Douglas Rodibaugh.

A missionary group from Texas was headed to Haiti and left behind the money intended to help with earthquake relief.

Lucky for them, the money fell in the right hands. “When I opened it a little bit and saw some money, right away I closed it back and took it to the supervisor,” said Mydil.

Mydil is originally from Haiti and has been working at the hotel for three years. Her husband just died several weeks ago, and she did not even have enough money to bury him. Despite that, she said, she was never tempted to do anything but the right thing. “I know it would have been a bad reputation for all the Haitian people working here and for my reputation. I came here to work, not to steal anything,” she said.

For her honesty, Mydil received a thank you letter from the missionary group, a $100 check from the airport and hotel and a certificate and plaque naming her employee of the month. “What she did is not teachable. This is something that comes from the heart,” said a manager.

“I am very proud and I feel good,” said Mydil.
