August 13th, 2009 by

DETROIT – A police chase on Detroit’s west side ended in a fiery and deadly explosion Thursday morning.

Michigan State Police confirm that a man driving a pickup truck traveling on Michigan Avenue died after his vehicle struck a minivan as it passed through an intersection just before 7 a.m., sideswiped another vehicle and slammed into a utility pole before exploding.

SkyFOX was overhead and captured video of the crash. The pickup was immediately engulfed in flames in a front of the Telway restaurant.

Police say the minivan driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Fire and rescue crews extinguished the fire and later covered the pickup with a tarp.

FOX 2′s Lee Thomas reports that the chase started in Taylor after a report of a stolen vehicle in Monroe. The chase continued through several westside streets.
