High-energy Will Muschamp takes over at Florida
Gainesville, FL– A high-energy Will Muschamp introduced himself to several hundred members of the media who cover the Florida Gators, on Tuesday night.
The 23rd head football coach in Florida history, walked into the room just after 6:30. 39-year-old Will Muschamp comes to Gainesville, without any head coaching experience on the college level. But he and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said, he’s a perfect fit.
“He wanted somebody that understood the expectations of the program,” said Muschamp. “And the expectations of Florida, is winning championships and believe me, I understand that. I understand what you’ve got to do in that situation to be successful. So when he described that to me on the phone, he got me more and more excited, because it felt like he was describing me.”
Gator fans are anxious to see who Muschamp hires as his offensive and defensive coordinators, but nothing yet. And Muschamp sounded a little irritated about the rumors already out there.
“There’s been no one offered a job in the country right now by the University of Florida, to work on our football staff, regardless of what you read. There’s one source in this football program, and that’s me. There’s one guy hiring coaches, and that’s me.”
Some may find it awkward that Muschamp’s predecessor will still be involved in the Florida football program. And Urban Meyer may have an office just down the hall from Muschamp. But both he and Jeremy Foley said it’s a non-issue.
“Urban Meyer is enough of a pro, he’s not going to be somewhere he doesn’t belong,” said Foley. “If Will Muschamp asks him a question, he’ll answer it. If Will Muschamp asks for his opinion, he’ll give it. Urban Meyer, that’s the least anybody has to worry about.”
“I can tell you this right now,” said Muschamp. “As long as Will Muschamp is the head coach at the University of Florida, Urban Meyer is going to be involved in this program. I’ve invited him to the weight room, I’ve invited him to the practice field, and I’ve invited him to the meetings and whatever he wants to do.”
Muschamp said he would attend Gators’ practices in preparation for the Outbook Bowl.
