Grandmother Accused in Fatal Axe Attack in Highland Park
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. - A sad ending to a long standoff in Highland Park. A 26-year-old mother is dead. It appears she was attacked with an axe by her child’s grandmother in front of the three-year-old boy.
The 26-year-old also has a six-year-old daughter in addition to the three-year-old. She had come to pick up her little boy from his father’s house.
“When we went in there, the lady, her leg was cut up with the axe and her neck and stuff, and that lady drug her in the basement and they (are) still in the basement. She’s got the baby down there hostage and the lady still with the axe still,” said Joe, a neighbor.
Inside a blue house were 26-year-old Milah Perry and three-year-old Carlos. Relatives say Perry had stopped by the home of DeCarlos Stewart to pick up Carlos, Jr., their son, but she was attacked with an axe by DeCarlos’ 60-year-old mother. Another woman ran from the house screaming.
“My mama killing Milah! My mama killing Milah! This lady is holding her body and my three-year-old cousin in the basement hostage with (an) axe,” said Charmiria Ashford, Perry’s cousin.
Neighbors tried to help, but could not. It happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Highland Park Police, Detroit Police and Michigan State Police were all on the scene along with hostage negotiators and S.W.A.T. teams.
Inside, relatives say Perry was bleeding from her wounds. For hours, nothing happened. Relatives were so distraught, at one point DeCarlos Stewart tried to run up to his house, but was handcuffed and later escorted away by police.
Police urged and participated in an impromptu prayer service. Finally, around 4:15 p.m., three-year-old Carlos was rescued. We understand he is okay. Shortly after, police brought out his grandmother, the woman accused of attacking and killing his mother with an axe.
“She could’ve easily turned on him. She has mental issues, so we don’t know which way it could’ve went. So, just thank God he came out one piece,” said Christell Ashford.
We’re told the grandmother just moved here recently from the South and she attacked Perry on Sunday, as well, that time with her fists. The 26-year-old had been warned by family members not to go back to the house, but she returned Monday to pick up her son.
