Gold allegedly ripped off prisoner’s teeth

NASHVILLE, March 16 (UPI) – A sheriff’s lieutenant’s decision to yank a gold grill out of the mouth of a prisoner likely will cost Nashville-area taxpayers $95,000, officials said.

Lt. Tanya Mayhew allegedly told Anthony McCoy, 31, who was brought into the Davidson County jail in Nashville for failure to pay child support, to open his mouth. She then allegedly used her rubber-gloved hand to yank out the gold jewelry grill attached to his teeth, the Nashville Tennessean reported Tuesday.

“He was spitting out blood and teeth into a trash can, and then told to get back in line,” McCoy attorney David Raybin said of the November incident.

Raybin said McCoy was left with a bloody mouth for 10 days during which he was refused dental treatment and given only Tylenol for the pain.

Nashville lawyers have worked out a $95,000 settlement, which is scheduled to be presented to the city council Tuesday evening, the newspaper said.

“This appears to be an unusual and pretty reprehensible act,” said Councilman Ronnie Steine, chairman of the budget and finance Committee.

Mayhew was demoted and received a five-day suspension for the incident, the Tennessean reported.
