Four shot in Brooksville; two dead

BROOKSVILLE (myfoxtampabay) - Deputies say when 55-year-old John Kalisz arrived at a gas station in Cross City, the damage and pain he had inflicted was already unthinkable and it wasn’t over.

“He was loaded for bear. He was ready to be involved in a shootout with law enforcement,” explained Hernando County Sheriff Rich Nugent.

Deputies say Kalisz’s trail of destruction was far reaching, ending in Dixie County, but starting much further south in a sleepy neighborhood in Brooksville.

“I sent my daughter out to play and we heard gunshots and she came in and said that there was police that were outside so we went outside and we had to dodge the police they were coming in so fast,” said Amanda Prestigiacomo, who lives in the neighborhood where the shootout happened.

Deputies arrived at the home on Wilhelm Street to find two elderly women had been shot to death. Two more women were critically injured. One of them, they say, is Kalisz’s niece who’s pregnant.

“It’s scary right in our neighborhood you know; Especially right next door. Very scary,” said neighbor Kathleen Miller.

Deputies say the suspect fled the scene, making specific threats toward law enforcement as he headed north. What Kalisz likely didn’t know is that investigators were watching his every move using his cell phone as a tracking device until he was spotted in Cross City.

“Dixie County experienced a shoot out with the subject,” explained Donna Black with The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

The scene in Dixie County is where it all came to an end with both Kalisz and a deputy, Captain Chad Reed shot. The sheriff’s fears were now realized; Captain reed shot in the line of duty.

“This is what we were fearful of. He made the statement that he was going to take out a deputy and he obviously carried through with that,” added Nugent.
