Father stabbed son at New Year’s party

TAMPA – Investigators say a child was stabbed 20 times by his own father at what was supposed to be a celebratory event.

The grandmother of the man accused of stabbing his young son on New Year’s Eve didn’t mince words when talking about the suspect.

“I know he’s a nut because anyone in his right mind would not have did that,” said Yvonne Mickles. “The baby don’t deserve this here.”

Xavier Thomas Sr. was behind bars Saturday after being charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of his 6-year-old son, Xavier Thomas Jr.

Just hours after the alleged attack, there were still blood stains on the playground where investigators say the elder Thomas stabbed his son 20 times.

Xavier Junior was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Investigators say there was a New Year’s Eve party Friday night at an apartment on 58th Street. They say at some point, Xavier Sr. took his son to a playground in the complex and when relatives noticed the boy was missing, they started looking for him.

According to deputies, Xavier Sr. ran after people asked where his son was. Moments later, Xavier Jr. was found covered in blood.

Michael Harris, who lives across from where the party was held, says the people who live in that apartment are the last people you would expect to be in trouble.

“They’re good people, they’re not bad people,” said Harris. “Just somebody they invited, I guess.”

The woman who helped raise Xavier Sr. says he’s been fighting demons for a long time.

“He’s crazy, okay? He’s been in and out of the mental hospital,” said Mickles. “I cannot see how those people could think that Xavier was well enough to come out.”

That said, she is thrilled that her great-grandson will survive and insists on looking on the bright side.

“Something good should come out of this here,” said Mickles, “if it’s nothing but the daddy getting the help he needs and mental health.”

Xavier, Jr. was stabbed in the back, neck, arm, and chest. Investigators say the boy’s father did not give any motive for the stabbing.

Sunday, Xavier Sr. appeared in court and was denied bond.
